Refrain

I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing In

Although some people wrongly believe this carol to be quite modern, it does in fact date back at least to the 17th century and probably even before then. Although the lyrics mention ships sailing into Bethlehem, the closest body of water to the city is in fact twenty miles away! There are two theories as to which three ships are being referred to. The first is that they could be those on the coat of arms of Wenceslaus II, King of Bohemia (who should not be confused with Saint Wenceslaus I, Duke of Bohemia, on whose life the carol Good King Wenceslas is based) which bore three ships (‘Azure three galleys argent’). The second is that the words refer to the three ships which apparently carried relics of the three Kings to Cologne Cathedral in the 12th century. As there are nine verses in total, I have only included the first verse on the music score; the full words can be found after the individual parts.
